Omayra Amaya's legacy is one of a deep and proud gypsy flamenco tradition. The grandniece of arguably the greatest Flamenco dancer who ever lived, Carmen Amaya, Omayra accepts the responsibility of her heritage with the same passion and uncontrolled vagrancy of Gypsy spirit as those of her lineage. Her daily exposure to the cultural roots of flamenco, with all of its subtleties and fervency, cultivated her innate love for the art and supplied the foundation of her style and technique. Omayra is a faculty member of the Boston Conservatory, the Boston Ballet, Harvard University Dance Department and Walnut Hill Performing Arts School.

Pasion y Arte First Friday Performances/Juerga!!!
First Friday of the Month
7pm - 11:30 pm at Bar Ferdinand

A juerga is a kind of flamenco jam session where there is no distinction between audience and performers and everyone takes part, supporting each other in collective playing, singing, and dancing. During particularly inspired moments, participants shout out “Olé!” encouraging each other with rhythmic handclapping called “palmas.”
The unique component in Pasión y Arte’s juergas is that the invitation to participate is open to all genres of music, singing, dance, and spoken word. The goal is to create new flamenco languages from different traditions. Special guest musicians and dancers – both professional flamencos, students, aficionados, artists from other Latino and non-Latino traditions – are invited to each juerga.

Bring your castanets and instruments and join in! This is a child-friendly event! Three 20 minute sets 7, 9, & 10:30pm.

Reservations for dinner recommended: 215-923-1313

There is a large bar area where you can have a drink and watch the performance!

Hear Here!
Phillyflamenco's review of flamenco music

The latest installment of "Hear Here" comes courtesy of the enchanting Alfonso Cid and is an exploration of one of the most enigmatic figures in flamenco history, Manuel Torre.

Manuel Torre. The singer of the black sounds.

(Manuel Soto Loreto. Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), 1878-Sevilla, 1933)

I'm going through a phase in which I can only listen to Manuel Torre.  Every time I listen to his recordings I find a new reason to go back to him, a new turn of his voice that I didn't notice before.  The lack of high fidelity in those recordings doesn't bother me at all because Manuel Torre was one of the most enigmatic figures of flamenco history and that is clear in those sounds from nearly a century ago. Peñas Flamencas

Phillyflamenco is privileged to have this insider's view of an authentic Sevillian Peña Flamenca. While spending the summer at the Cristina Heeren Flamenco Foundation in Sevilla, special contributor (and dear friend)
Alfonso Cid sat down with Juan Iglesias Hernández (the president of the Federación Provincial de Sevilla de Entidades Flamencas to discuss his experience as past president of the Peña Flamenca Torres-Macarena.
